If Tony Karlowicz has his way, he'll be going from balancing the books to weighing the hops. The 33 year old accountant and his partner, Edward Fabrycki, Jr. are well on their way to officially launching Hartford's first new Craft brewery since 2006. Back East Ale, their flagship product, is a beer that Tony describes as 'a medium-bodied, amber-colored ale, featuring a subtle fruity aroma, well-balanced malt character with just a slight hop bitterness, and a clean crisp finish.'

That's some pretty heavy poetry from a CPA who spent six years with the accounting firm of KPMG and is now a client relations manager at CIGNA. But he's been waiting a long time to say this. He started fantasizing about starting a Craft brewery back in college in Vermont in the late 1990s. 'Craft brewing in Vermont was everywhere,' he says. 'You could always find fresh, great-tasting, locally-brewed, beer. I started imagining myself launching a brewery even back then.' An entrepreneur at heart, with degrees and experience in business and accounting; Tony grew up in a small business family, and he was always preparing for the time when he would launch his own business.

His partner Edward is a professional engineer, who learned the science and art of brewing while in San Diego in the 1990s. A Nutmegger by birth, he moved back to Connecticut in 2000 with the dream of someday operating a Craft brewery. He brought back with him not only a passion for Craft beer and brewing experience, but also the inspiration for the name Back East.

Like many great entrepreneurs, the two partners (who are also cousins) started their venture in a garage - in this case, the Fabrycki family garage in Southington. They began working on the recipe for Back East Ale in early 2006 and have been experimenting with a wide variety of other recipes, all the while immersing themselves in all things Craft beer.

Now, their dream looks to be closer than ever. If the two stay on their current track, Back East Brewing Company should officially roll out the first kegs from their Bloomfield brewery by October 2011. They already have a distributor that will offer their products to package stores, bars, and restaurants across the Greater Hartford area. In addition, they have an experienced commercial brewer who will bring close to a decade of experience to Back East. They are the only Craft brewery currently in planning in Hartford county and will be only the third packaging brewery in Hartford County, joining Olde Burnside and Thomas Hooker.

Increased interest in Craft beer has been sweeping the country. In 2010, 1,759 small and independent Craft brewers saw their volume increase 11 percent and retail sales dollars jump 12 percent over 2009, according to The Brewers Association, the trade association representing the majority of U.S. brewing companies. These small, independent breweries provide an estimated 100,000 job in the US and brew more than 100 different styles of beer, all while adding to the vibrancy and culture of their local communities.

'Connecticut does not enjoy the same selection of local Craft beer that states like Colorado, California, Washington, Oregon, and even Vermont and Maine have,' says Back East co-founder Edward Fabrycki, Jr. 'We are excited to start selling our Back East ale and several other offerings. It will be brewed locally by a skilled and experienced team who share a long-time passion for great-tasting, high-quality Craft beer.'
